Shady Little Lady is a fun, catchy pop song about the struggles of OCD and the comfort that destructive behaviors can bring and is a character I created to represent OCD. She is compulsion personified. She crawled through my ear when I was 12 and never left. She lives in my brain.

I like bringing absurdism and humor into unexpected situations. I like to juxtapose more dismal lyrics with an upbeat sound. But mostly, I want to write and sing what people don’t want to talk about. Neurodivergence is misunderstood and underrepresented. If I can make a popular song that’s about OCD, then hopefully people will feel less shameful about their own neurodivergence. The more that neurodivergence is talked about, the more people will feel comfortable in telling their own stories. I felt shame about this topic for too long. I wish I’d had a song about it when I was younger. I hope to create the songs I never had growing up.

One theme of this song is recognizing that destructive behaviors can be self-soothing. Just because you recognize that something is harming you doesn’t mean you can immediately cut it out of your life. Pulling out my hair makes me feel temporarily calmer. I know it’s not good for me, and I know that calmness is soon replaced with more anxiety. But there’s a fear that comes with saying goodbye to a self-soothing habit.
